CO/USA Wrestling is all about community, a family of wrestling people, all with specific interests and activities, working together for the benefit of the sport and for its young people. For adults, there are many ways to get involved in CO/USA Wrestling as a volunteer. A person can be a:

  • Coach – teaching the sport to young people and mentoring them at practice and competition. These people like to help develop the wrestling and life skills in their students.
  • Team Leader – an organizer of activities on the club, state or national levels, who enjoys the responsibility of planning and executing a variety of activities for athletes.
  • Mat Official – the men and women who referee wrestling matches at competitions. These people enjoy the challenge of making the right calls and learning the rules and procedures of sports.
  • Pairing Official – the men and women who organize wrestling events, conduct the tournaments, and keep records of the results. They enjoy the challenge of making events run smoothly and providing young people with a chance to compete.
  • Event volunteer – the many people who take care of the details that make events go, such as running score clocks, running bout sheets, taking entry fees and registrations, working the concessions, the variety of tasks that are essential at every competition.
  • State leader – the dozens of people who join the committees and Boards that are the backbone of Colorado USAW, a democratic system of decision making and accountability.

How CO/USA Wrestling is structured as a not-for-profit organization affiliated with with USA Wrestling, the National Governing Body for the sport in the United States, which is a member organization of the U.S. Olympic Committee. It is overseen by a Board of Directors of volunteers, and has an extensive structure to develope and coordinate wrestling activites. There is a professional national staff which carries out the policies of USA Wrestling, based in Colorado Springs, Colo.

As a not-for-profit organization, funds generated through various programs and membership goes directly back to CO/USAW members in the form of more opportunities and activities.

CO/USA Wrestling provides each of its members and supporters a “shared journey” within wrestling. Young people experience the sport through its programs, improving as athletes and learning valuable life lessons such as self confidence, dedication, goal-setting and more. Athletes make friends for life by participating in the training, competition and travel. This is true for all athletes, not just the elite wrestler, but for all wrestlers at every age and skill level. There is a high quality experience provided to each member.

Adults often start with CO/USA Wrestling to support their children’s involvement. When they make the effort to be a volunteer, the sport becomes available to everybody. They do much more than “getting the job done.” There is great satisfaction in being a part of the entire big picture. Volunteers often say that they receive much more than they have given. Olympic champion Dave Schultz said that if he cut up his gold medal and gave a piece to everybody who helped him, there would be way too many people involved to give them even a small sliver. CO/USA Wrestling is a true community of people who choose to be in the sport.
