What does the Arkansas Valley have going for it that no other part of the state does? How about the longest running Freestyle tournament in the
state. Since 1966, the Rocky Ford Classic has been a staple of Colorado wrestling. Not only does it bring wrestlers from Colorado’s South East Corner of the state out, but it’s a chance for Front Range wrestlers to travel to meet up with not only Arkansas Valley wrestlers, but wrestlers from as far away as Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Kansas.
For years, Rocky Ford, La Junta, Swink, Crowley County, Fowler, Lamar (just to name a few) have been turning out great wrestlers, and with a strong and historic wrestling programs. It’s often heard at the High School State tournament at the Pepsi center … “Where did that kid come from?” Nine times out of ten, it’s in reference to a kid from the Arkansas Valley area, and with good reason.
This Friday and Saturday, the tradition of the Rocky Ford Classic will continue in the historic Melondome, and you can count on two things … tough competition, and different competition!
A quick clarification, and correction, pertaining to the following Saturday’s tournament at Wheatridge MS. The flyer has been updated to correctly reflect Friday and Saturday’s wrestling will be on April 20th and April 21st (Greco and Freestyle respectively) for the Jefferson Brawl. Please see the event schedule for the entire schedule listing.
